Friday Prompt: Belonging

Read this on galpod.com.

Important note

This prompt is not an easy one. Please take care of yourself. If this is something you feel you can’t handle just now, you absolutely don’t have to. If you feel overwhelmed and don’t know who to talk to, here are a few helpful numbers:

UK: 116 123 (Samaritans)

USA: 1-800-273-8255 (National Suicide Prevention)

Israel: 1201 (Eran)

International: find your number here.

This week, I’ve been thinking about belonging. As an immigrant, this theme is never far from the surface. It’s a fascinating theme to unpack, especially for writers. The need to belong is a basic human need, and it intertwines with our feeling of safety because we evolved to have a group with us.

So, today, I invite you to think about feelings of belonging or the lack thereof. What makes you (or your character) feel like you belong? What makes you feel like an outsider? Why is that? As always, if you’re not sure where to begin, just set a timer for five minutes and jot down everything that pops into your head, then pick one that piques your interest.

Hey there! I would love to hear whatever you're willing to share that came from the prompt. Please comment below or click on the chat window, even if it's only to tell me that you've found this prompt useful (or ridiculous).
