End of May Reflections

Read this on galpod.com.

This week we're on a half-term break, five weeks after the term started. On the one hand, it's been a fairly relaxed break, and it's the first school break this year we've stayed home. On the other hand, it makes for a busy May. Also, the fact that my partner was on three business trips this month puts a cog in the wheels of the family routine.

I haven't been writing too much, and it's starting to bother me. It's a little bit like a water build-up. It's not much, but if I don't let it out, it's going to overflow or blow off the dam. But the problem is, I'm not sure what to write. I'm still working on my first novel, but I struggle to write a spiralling into depression while the kids are playing Minecraft. I need perhaps a bit more space and time for that, which I hope I can create starting next week. If I'm completely honest, I want to start working on my new idea. That's what I want to write right now. But I also promised my doctoral supervisor that I'll finish this paper we've been working on for two years now. It's not my fault it had been delayed, but it's in my court now, so it's my responsibility. It doesn't require a lot of creative energy, but it does require time and motivation.

And, of course, there's the album. We started recording in May, which has taken some of my time and also quite a lot of my creative energy. I suspect this is why the dam hasn't blown off yet. We have two more recording days this coming week, and then once a week for the rest of June to "chip away" at the vocals as the producer calls it. I'm hoping it'll be done before the summer holidays.

In terms of reading, I finished reading Steelheart, but it hasn't been the utter page-turner I've expected from Brandon Sanderson. I read The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, but I'm still working on Inferior. I'm almost there, though. I re-read Good Omens because we went to see Neil Gaiman (and David Tennant and Michael Sheen!) talk about the new series, which I'm rather excited about.

So, goals for June:

Reading: reading group book, The Silence of the Girls (I'm almost done), and read the June book. Finish reading Inferior (non-fiction), and The Hate You Give, which I started reading on my kindle.

Writing: blog, matrix paper (non-fiction, unfortunately), edit my first novel.

Volunteering: On leave until September.

Family Activity: Harry Potter Studios this Sunday! So exciting. Also, my mom is coming to visit, and it's my daughter's birthday.

Exploring Activity: I will definitely go explore with my mom, but I have no specifics yet.
